Brief history

The department was formed in 1981 with the acquisition of the Florisbad fossil site by the National Museum as a research station. In 1984 the department was formally named the "Florisbad Quaternary Research Department". Since then the department has developed a research infrastructure used nationally and internationally. Although the composition of expertise within the department is focussed on Quaternary palaeontology, and Stone Age archaeology, we interact with local and foreign scientists to complement our work. The department is also one of only two museum institutions in South Africa which provides archaeological faunal analysis on a regular basis.
