On April 15, 2012 the tragic sinking of the Titanic a hundred years ago will be remembered. This luxury passenger steamliner collided with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. A total of 1 178 people, among them renowned British and American magnates and millionaires, perished in the disaster. News of the shocking events reverberated across the globe, and made an impression in Bloemfontein too. Currently a display of the Titanic and the events surrounding the ship’s sinking may be viewed at the National Museum in Bloemfontein. The display offers a visual overview of the events, including the reaction of the Bloemfontein community to the tragedy. Photographs, books and objects from the era are on display. Model ships, among them a passenger steamliner from the same era as the Titanic, may also be seen. The exhibition is on view until the end of July.
