Education

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is an open public educational institution, providing free access to its Collection of fine South African paintings, sculptures and prints. The Education Department forms a vital link between the Art Museum and the public; through continual dialogue, a wide audience is encouraged to find enjoyment and meaning in South African Art. In its educational functions the Museum endeavours to promote the essential function that the arts play in the development of creative and intellectual abilities by means of exhibitions, lectures and videos. Guided tours are offered to tour groups and to those with special needs. Willem Boshoff’s Blind Alphabet is an attraction for blind visitors. The Museum manages educational programmes that cater for all age groups, including practical workshops, educator training and the provision of a venue for the practice of various art forms.

An important role played by the Art Museum in a multi-cultural and diverse society is to present the artistic endeavours of all artists to the community, making these accessible to all. In an ongoing commitment to nurture and encourage the development of local artistic talent, the Museum hosts several workshops and learning sessions for local artists and children from various schools and disadvantaged communities.

Outreach Art Classes

Oliewenhuis Art Museum offers free art classes for underprivileged learners from previously disadvantaged communities who have an interest in and passion for visual art.

The classes, presented by Kgosimang Mothibi and Isaura Nogueira, take place every Thursday afternoon from 2:00pm - 4:30pm.

Educational Services

Guided tours of Oliewenhuis Art Museum

The Education Officer and/or guides provide guided tours of the Permanent Collection, Temporary Exhibitions, Sculpture Park, Reservoir and African Carousel; bookings are essential. Exciting activity sheets for Primary School learners will soon be introduced.

Regular walkabouts, lectures and workshops by well-known artists or lecturers

Visits to schools and tertiary institutions

The Education Officer would like to visit your school or institution (in the Bloemfontein/Mangaung area) to deliver a PowerPoint presentation in English or Afrikaans as an introduction to Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Topics include the history and mission of the Museum and what the Museum has to offer. Contact the Education Officer to arrange a visit.

Holiday activities and workshops for children

Holiday workshops are arranged to entertain children during the holidays.

Lectures on art-related topics can be arranged with the Education Officer.

Educators and lecturers are welcome to request lectures on specific subjects (relating to art) to support their teaching curriculum.
