The Department is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to assist with the day-to-day running of the Department and to assist with the activities outlined below. The successful candidate will have a high level of manual dexterity, have a proven interest in insect systematic/taxonomy and a flexible attitude to the duties of the post.
Requirements
- Minimum requirement a BSc (Hons) degree in Entomology/Zoology.
- An enthusiastic interest in entomological taxonomy and systematics.
- High level of manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- The ability to work on repetitive tasks for extended periods without compromising standards and with minimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work well within a research team.
- An energetic, resourceful and flexible approach to the requirements of the post.
- Computer literacy (GIS mapping skills an advantage).
- A valid driver’s licence.
Key Performance Areas
- Processing entomological specimens generated through fieldwork.
- Sorting of spirit-preserved material, mounting and preliminary identification.
- Maintenance of the departmental databases, including the addition of incoming material.
- Curation of collections and management of the collection to highest international standards.
- Preparation of loans and incorporation of returned loan material.
- Assisting Curator with research activities as requested (experience in scientific illustration an advantage).
- Assisting in fieldwork as required.
- Assisting with the provision of professional services to other researchers and the general public at large.
- Assisting with departmental projects as required.
- Assisting with the preparation of text and images for displays and other presentations.
- Assistance in the supervision of training and trainees.
- Assisting with departmental administrative tasks.
- Other duties as instructed by the Curator.
All candidates invited for interview are expected to undertake a simple manual dexterity test to assess their suitability for the post.

Requirements
- BA Fine Arts or a BA with History of Art or similar qualification.
- Experience and/or a qualification in the field of education will be a strong recommendation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work well within a team,to enjoy being involved in multiple activities and to be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- An energetic, resourceful and flexible approach to the requirements of the post.
- Fluency in English and Afrikaans, with fluency in Sesotho or Setswana a strong recommendation.
- Computer literacy and a valid driver's license.
Key Performance Areas
- Coordinate, develop and market educational programmes aligned to the most recent curricula for pre-primary-, primary-, high school- and tertiary learners.
- Coordinate and market tour/ lecture/ walkabout and workshop programmes.
- Coordinate and develop outreach and training programmes.
- Conduct school and other group tours and lectures.
- Build strong relationships with Free State (FS) schools, the FS Education Department, other relevant provincial departments, the corporate sector, media, community & environmental groups, artists and art galleries/museums including assistance with Friends of Oliewenhuis Art Museum and Fractal functions and projects.
- Maintain and further develop educational materials/resources focusing on South African Art and artists, for all age groups.
- Effective handling of queries from the public.
- Assist with general administration, temporary exhibitions, projects and functions.
